How Amazon KDP royalties work

For eBooks, Amazon pays 70% of the list price when the book is priced between $2.99 and $9.99, and 35% outside that range. For paperbacks and hardcovers, you receive 60% of the list price minus the printing cost, which depends on page count and ink.

This calculator uses those standard rates for US sales. Expanded distribution to bookstores and libraries pays a lower rate.

Choosing the right list price

Look at the bestsellers in your category and price close to them. A paperback priced well above its genre will sell fewer copies, and one priced too low may not cover printing. Start with a price that gives you a healthy royalty and adjust after launch.

Self-publishing vs traditional royalties

Traditional publishers typically pay 7.5 to 10% of list price on print and around 25% of net receipts on eBooks, usually after an advance has earned out. Self-publishing pays far more per copy, but you fund production and marketing.
