Check whether your manuscript is in the typical range for its genre, and how long it takes to read.
Agents, publishers and readers all have expectations about length. A thriller that runs 150,000 words or a picture book with 2,000 words signals that the manuscript may need more editing before it is ready.
Adult fiction usually sits between 70,000 and 100,000 words, with fantasy and science fiction running longer. Non-fiction is often shorter, especially business and self-help. Children’s books have the strictest limits.
Being outside the range is not a rule-breaker, but it is worth a second look. A developmental editor can tell you whether the length serves the story or whether some chapters should be cut or expanded.
