Readers decide in seconds whether to click. A cover that sells does three things well.
It signals the genre
A thriller should look like a thriller. Readers scan for familiar cues such as color, type and imagery, and a cover that breaks those cues gets skipped.
It reads as a thumbnail
Most readers first see your cover at the size of a postage stamp. The title and main image must still be clear at that size.
The type is part of the design
Strong typography holds a cover together. A great image with weak lettering looks amateur.
