Scolopax rusticola, the European woodcock, has been observed and hunted from the British Isles, northern Europe, China and India to the eastern United States. A larger version of the American woodcock (Scolopax minor), this relative of the snipe, sandpiper and curlew has adapted to shrubby woodland with soft, damp soil, where it can easily find earthworms, snails and some seeds and berries.
It brings together in one volume an amazing amount of detail on the behavior, feeding, migratory patterns and habitat of this shy upland bird.
